OVERVIEW:
Under direct supervision of the Operations Manager or designee performs a variety of skilled work including the work of Site Spotters directing the entry and exit of commercial and private vehicles and directing drivers on where and how to park and any other floor activity performed. Secondary, will operate at the direction of the Operations Manager or designee, transfer station equipment including loaders, excavators, skid steers, fork lifts and any other equipment necessary for compacting, loading, and moving of refuse within a refuse transfer station site.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pulls recyclables from the main waste stream, separates and loads those recyclables into designated containers for shipping. Keeps recycling area clean.
Directs and monitors both private individuals and commercial haulers who dump refuse at the transfer station site. Directs traffic flow by offering customers clear and concise instructions to enter and/ or stop using hand signals and appropriate verbal communication.
Advises the public on safe methods of dumping refuse; advising customers against unsafe unloading practices i.e. backing up the floor conditions.
Recognize and strive to prevent the dumping of hazardous wastes and other non-acceptable wastes.
Warns unobservant customers away from the path of heavy equipment and debris.
Maintains a calm demeanor while dealing with fellow employees and the public.
Maintains Transfer Station site and grounds in a clean manner by picking up litter and removing spilled materials according to OHSA guidelines; and controls dust by hosing down or sweeping parking area, C&D loading area, green waste, HHW and road ways.
Under the direction of site supervision and need operates heavy equipment including the loaders, excavators, skid steers and other potential equipment.
Under the direction of supervision checks and services assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs; submits reports as required; reports mechanical problems for repairs.
Must be bonded if receiving monies from the sale of green waste products.
Other duties as assigned.
ABOUT YOU:
Education: Completion of high school or equivalent
Experience: One (1) year of Heavy Equipment Operation or Road Work experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge: Knowledge of Heavy Equipment Principles and practice; some knowledge of the common hazards and safety precautions relating to equipment operations; knowledge of department policies; knowledge of the safety measures required while working with various tools and the job; knowledge of flagging procedures for the safety of tallow employees and general public.
Skills: Skill in the operation of assigned equipment. Excellent public relations skill.
Abilities: Ability to operate assigned equipment under varying conditions; ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; ability to learn and follow standard safety practices and procedures common to equipment operation work; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and general public.
YOUR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
May be subject to 24-hours call depending on emergencies.
Will be required to have access to an operating telephone or equivalent method of contact in case of emergency.
Must be willing to work eight (8) to ten (10) hour shifts.
Must be able to count money and make change accurately.
Incumbent must live sufficiently close to the Transfer Station to respond to an emergency within a reasonable period of time.
Applicants who are selected for employment with Weber County will be required to submit an up-to-date copy of their Motor Vehicle Record from the Utah State License Division prior to starting work.
Experience with motorized vehicles and equipment, including loaders, skid steer, utility truck, excavator, common hand and power tools, shovels, mobile and portable radio, phone.
Computer equipment connected to scales for loading of transfer trailers and scale house operation.
Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment background check prior to starting the position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and /or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. It will be necessary to be able to wear respirator equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Ninety percent of the work is performed in an unheated or non-air-conditioned building.
